What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are a common dental procedure used to restore the function and appearance of damaged or decayed teeth. They are custom-made to fit over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and improve its appearance. Dental crowns are typically used when a tooth is too damaged to be fixed with a filling, but not damaged enough to require a tooth extraction. Dental crowns are a popular and effective treatment option for many dental issues and can help to improve the overall health of your teeth and gums.

Dental Crown Treatment at Cheyenne Family Dental Center

Before treatment, Dr. Massie will likely need to do an exam to ensure that a dental crown is the best form of treatment for the damaged tooth. If you have recently had x-rays done elsewhere, please let us know in advance so we can have your records transferred before your appointment.

On the day of treatment, Dr. Massie will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to fit the crown. Using our 3D scanner, we will take a digital scan of the prepared tooth to make the dental crown custom to your mouth and bite.

We will make you a temporary crown to wear while the permanent crown is being made at our dental lab. At Cheyenne Family Dental Center we take an extra step in our dentistry to make the temporary cap tooth colored (some dentists will leave the cap a bright yellow).

Once the permanent crown is ready, you will return to have the temporary crown removed and Dr. Massie will cement the permanent crown in place. There are different types of dental crowns, Dr. Massie will recommend the material that’s best for you and your smile.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are different types of dental crowns, each with their own unique benefits and uses. The most common types of dental crowns include:

  • Porcelain Crowns: These are the most popular type of dental crowns. They are made of a mixture of porcelain and metal and are designed to match the color and shape of your natural teeth. They are strong, durable, and resistant to staining.
  • Gold Crowns: Gold crowns are made of a mixture of gold, copper, and other metals. They require less of the tooth’s structure to be removed. Gold crowns are strong and durable, but are not as natural-looking as porcelain crowns.
  • Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia crowns are made of a durable, tooth-colored ceramic material. They are strong and durable and are designed to match the color of your natural teeth.

At your appointment, Dr. Massie will make a recommendation for what type of crown is best for you and your unique circumstance.
